Gel "Metrogil Denta": composition, instructions for use

To treat inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity, it is recommended to use effective means, for example, the inexpensive Metrogyl Denta gel. It is used for the prevention and treatment of gingivitis, stomatitis, periodontal disease and other dangerous pathologies. The drug is characterized by rapid action and minimal likelihood of side effects. Sold in pharmacies without a doctor's prescription.

Gel "Metrogil Denta": description, composition

The drug is available in the form of a gel, which is packaged in plastic tubes of various sizes. The active ingredients are chlorhexidine and metronidazole.

It has high antimicrobial activity due to the presence of 2 substances in its composition. The following additional compounds are used: propylene glycol, water, sodium in the form of hydroxide, others.

The product is stored under normal room conditions at temperatures up to 25 degrees Celsius. It is important to protect from direct sunlight and prevent children from accessing it. The shelf life of the gel is 3 years from the date of production. After this time, the drug cannot be used.

Interaction

If the gel is applied topically in the doses indicated in the instructions, it almost does not interact with other drugs.

But it is still not recommended to use the gel with certain medications. Thus, it should not be used with coumarin anticoagulants , as the blood clotting time increases. When used simultaneously with Disulfiram, the level of toxicity of both drugs increases. When used simultaneously with Phenobarbital and phenytoin, the effectiveness of metronidazole decreases.

Pharmacodynamics

The drug has a combined effect, since it contains 2 active components with an antibacterial effect:

  1. Chlorhexidine acts on a wide class of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. At the same time, it does not inhibit the vital activity of beneficial lactobacilli.
  2. Metronidazole destroys bacteria that live in an oxygen environment, i.e. aerobic microorganisms. They are the ones that cause periodontal disease.

The gel is used topically, so its active components are practically not absorbed through the walls of blood vessels and do not enter the bloodstream.

Symptoms

1st half of pregnancy.

Typically, symptoms of gingivitis occur in the 3-4th month of pregnancy, since during this period intense hormonal changes occur, leading to the development of the catarrhal form of the disease. Gingivitis manifests itself as follows:

  • bleeding gums;
  • pain when brushing teeth;
  • swelling of the marginal part of the gums and gingival papillae;
  • change in gum color (first redness, then blueness).

2nd half of pregnancy.

Inflammation, accompanied by swelling and bleeding, worsens. The gingival papillae and marginal gums may begin to grow. This type of gingivitis is called hypertrophic. It is especially pronounced in the area of the front teeth and in places where there are overhanging edges of crowns and fillings that injure the gums. Hypertrophic gingivitis comes in two forms:

  • edematous – the gingival papillae enlarge, become blue in color, become soft to the touch, have polypous growths or a loose structure;
  • fibrous – the gingival papillae enlarge and at the same time become dense.

Indications for use

The drug is used for various inflammatory pathologies occurring in the oral cavity:

  • gingivitis in the acute and chronic stages;
  • Vincent's gingivitis in acute form;
  • periodontitis in acute and chronic form;
  • aphthous stomatitis;
  • juvenile prodontitis;
  • periodontal disease as a complication of gingivitis;
  • cheilitis;
  • inflammation of the oral mucosa as a complication after using a prosthesis;
  • alveolitis of post-extraction type;
  • periodontitis, abscess.

Causes

The development of gingivitis in pregnant women may be associated with changes in hormonal levels, which are characterized by:

increased concentrations of estrogens, progesterone, prostaglandins the appearance of toxicosis

However, hormonal changes usually only predispose to the occurrence of gingivitis, and its actual causes are as follows:

  • accumulation of soft plaque due to poor oral hygiene;
  • exacerbation of sluggish chronic gingivitis during pregnancy.

Contraindications and side effects

In some cases the gel cannot be used:

  • individual sensitivity to any component of the drug;
  • blood diseases, including in the past observation;
  • pathologies of the central and peripheral nervous system;
  • children up to 17 years old inclusive.

During pregnancy and lactation, the use of the gel is allowed with caution. A preliminary consultation with a doctor is recommended. Admission is carried out only if the expected benefit is greater than the potential risks.

When taking the drug, skin rashes, itching, headaches, redness, hives and other allergic reactions are possible. In this case, it is recommended to stop treatment and consult a specialist for advice. You may need to change the drug.

Are there any restrictions during pregnancy?

Tooth extraction is rarely performed during pregnancy - only in cases where there are emergency indications that threaten the course of pregnancy and the health of the woman and fetus. If the doctor believes that removal cannot be avoided, it is very important to follow all the specialist’s recommendations in the postoperative period, even if the expectant mother feels well. The natural decrease in immunity during pregnancy contributes to the rapid growth of pathogenic flora in case of penetration of bacteria and microbes into the oral cavity, therefore it is important to provide antiseptic treatment with the help of drugs prescribed by a doctor.

The official instructions indicate the first trimester of pregnancy as a contraindication for use, but in rare cases, the doctor may prescribe this remedy in the early stages of pregnancy (up to 12-14 weeks). It is important to follow the indicated dosages and number of uses per day. In the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, the use of the gel is safe and does not affect the condition and growth of the fetus due to the low absorption of the active ingredients.

Important! At any stage of pregnancy, before using Metrogyl Denta, it is better to consult a doctor. Women who are breastfeeding must stop lactation for the period of treatment.

Instructions for use of gel "Metrogil Denta"

The drug is used only locally, without oral administration. The instructions depend on the indications:

  1. In case of inflammation, the gel is applied to the surface of the gums in a small layer. This can be done with a clean finger or a sterile cotton swab. The procedure is repeated 2 times a day. The medicine cannot be washed off, so you should avoid contact with water, food and drinks for half an hour after taking it. Therapy is continued for 7-10 days.
  2. To treat periodontitis, the affected surfaces must be treated with a gel application. This can be done in a clinic or on your own. The layer needs to be applied for 30 minutes. The procedures are carried out several times until complete recovery. As a rule, 2 times a day for 7-10 days is enough.
  3. In the case of aphthous stomatitis, the affected areas of the mucous membranes are coated with the composition 2 times a day for 7-10 days.
  4. To prevent chronic gingivitis, the gel should be used in the same way - it is applied to the gums 2 times a day, treatment is continued for 1 to 1.5 weeks. The same cycles are repeated 2-3 times a year.
  5. To prevent post-extraction type alveolitis, the cavity after the extracted tooth is coated with gel 2 or 3 times a day for 1-1.5 weeks.

What to do in case of accidental ingestion?

This situation is typical mainly for pediatric patients, so children should use the gel strictly under adult supervision. If a small amount of the drug is accidentally ingested, no significant changes in well-being are usually observed.

When consuming large doses of the gel, signs of drug poisoning are possible, which include:

  • dizziness and headache;
  • nausea;
  • vomiting;
  • convulsive syndrome;
  • tremor of the upper and lower extremities;
  • paresthesia (disturbances in the functioning of sensory receptors, manifested by numbness, tingling, sensation of “pins and needles”).

If these symptoms appear, you should seek medical help. Treatment begins with copious gastric lavage with warm saline solution. If necessary, symptomatic therapy is prescribed, which may include the drugs listed in the table below.

Table. Symptomatic treatment regimen for accidental gel poisoning.

Group of drugsDrugs used
Sorbents and medications to eliminate intoxication"Filtrum-sti", "Polysorb", "Neosmectin", "Enterosgel"
Rehydration agents (for profuse and repeated vomiting to restore water and mineral balance)"Regidron" (powder for preparing saline solution)
Prebiotics and lactic acid bacteria (if necessary)"Acipol", "Normobakt", "Bifidumbacterin"

Important! Any of the listed medications can be used only if there are absolute indications after consultation with a doctor.

Metrogyl Denta is one of the most popular dental drugs that can be prescribed for the treatment and prevention of infectious lesions and inflammatory processes in the oral cavity. After tooth extraction, the product disinfects the socket, prevents the growth of bacterial flora, and helps quickly cope with pain and signs of gum inflammation at the extraction site. Before use, it is recommended to consult a doctor, as the gel has contraindications.

special instructions

The drug has an antiseptic effect and disinfects the oral cavity well. However, its use does not replace the need to brush your teeth, which should be done as usual 2 times a day - in the morning and before bed.

If the gel is accidentally ingested (can be swallowed by a child), you should immediately seek emergency help. You may need gastric lavage and appropriate medications.

After the expiration date, the remaining product should not be thrown into the sewer or as garbage on the street. It is placed in a tight bag and then thrown into a trash container.

There is no data on the effect of the gel on the speed of psychomotor reactions. Therefore, it can be used by drivers and other workers whose activities involve the need to make quick decisions.

Does smoking affect the effectiveness of use?

Dentists note that about 50% of patients seeking dental care suffer from tobacco addiction. Smoking negatively affects the condition of the mucous membranes, reduces local immunity and causes irritation of the gums. Tobacco smoke interferes with the healing of the hole after extraction and can become one of the factors provoking postoperative complications, so doctors recommend stopping (or at least reducing the number of cigarettes smoked) during the recovery period after surgery.

Important! Smoking is not a contraindication for the use of Metrogyl Denta, but it significantly reduces the effectiveness of therapy, preventing rapid healing of the socket and tissue regeneration.
