Making slime is a fascinating hobby that is loved not only by children, but also by adults. In this regard, many novice creators will be interested in knowing how to thicken the slime if it turns out runny during the production process. The means at hand, which can be found in every home, will help correct the situation.
Thickeners for slime list
In fact, a wide variety of cosmetics and household products, pharmaceutical preparations and food products are suitable for this.
The list of the most popular includes:
- sodium tetraborate;
- laundry or dishwashing gel;
- salicylic acid;
- Teymurov spray/paste;
- Visin eye drops;
- Polish for hair;
- air freshener;
- liquid for contact lenses;
- starch;
- salt;
- sugar;
- gelatin;
- soda.
The recommended type of thickener is usually indicated in the slime recipe. If the prescribed component is not at hand, you can select an analogue from the list. In order for a replacement activator to perform its intended function, it is important to know its properties. We will analyze them in our article.
What supplements should I use for beauty?
You can diversify the appearance of slime using various additives. The additives usually include:
- various dyes;
- foam balls;
- glitter;
- beads;
- foil.
Gouache
Gouache should be used if there is a need to give the slime a matte finish . It must be remembered that gouache contains white, so over time the color will begin to fade. In order to give the toy the required shade, just one or two grams of gouache is enough, that is, on the tip of a knife or teaspoon.
Watercolor paints
The paints are more watery and not dense, like gouache. Therefore, you need to add them to slime in larger quantities - on average 2 or 3 times more than gouaches.
Egg dyes
The paint used to color Easter eggs is also suitable for coloring slime with the required pigment. This paint is available in the form of powder and solution. If you use a solution, just a few drops are enough. The powder should be used in an amount of one or two grams.
Glitter
Glitter or sparkles are small particles of foil , often they are simply round, but if desired, you can also find other shapes - stars, diamonds. You can find them in specialized stores. They are used mainly in printing, as well as for creating holiday manicure and makeup.
Cut foil
Regular baking foil can also be an excellent addition to slime and make it more beautiful. To do this, you just need to cut the foil into small pieces, add it to the mass and mix thoroughly. If you add such foil to transparent slime, then during the game it will shimmer with bright light and cast glare.
Beads
Multi-colored beads are another way to diversify your slime and make it more beautiful. In this case, it is best to use small beads. They look especially impressive if the slime is transparent.
Foam balls
Using foam balls you can not only diversify the appearance of the slime, but also its texture. Multi-colored balls can be matched to the color of the slime itself or choose some other color. They are sold in specialized stores for children's creativity and are already packaged in small bags - 10-20 grams or bottles - 100-200 milligrams. When playing with such a slime, it will make an unusual crunch.
Pearlescent powder and silver
In order to decorate the slime and make it original and iridescent, you can add pearlescent powder or silver. It is enough to pour one or two teaspoons of mother-of-pearl or silver mass into the already prepared mass, and then mix it all thoroughly.
Boric acid as a slime thickener
The basic composition of borax includes boric acid salts. They have a thickening effect on mucus, providing it with the desired consistency and elasticity. Taking this into account, not only tetraborate, but also other salt-containing products can be used as an activator. They help give shape and density to slimes.
From the point of view of elementary chemistry, they refer to active components that act as a catalyst in the process of a chemical reaction. The activator is added after mixing all the components. The amount depends on the desired density of the slime and its size.
It is important to know:
- Suitable thickeners instead of boric acid include: Visin eye drops, contact lens liquid, or table salt solution.
- Borax powder may cause allergic reactions. You should wear gloves when working with it. Before using the drug, it must be dissolved in water in the proportion of 1 tablespoon of powder to 1 glass of water.
What is sodium tetraborate
Borax (borax), the sodium salt of boric acid or more commonly known as disodium tetraborate decahydrate, is a rare borate mineral from the borate group. The substance crystallizes in a monoclinic system, forming short, prismatic or lamellar crystals. In nature it forms colorless monoclinic soft crystals.
Sodium tetraborate for slime
The reagent is colorless and odorless and dissolves well in glycerol; at a temperature of about 100°C it loses some of its water and forms pentahydrate. With further heating it melts to a glassy melt. In the metaphorical state, many metal oxides dissolve to form characteristic spots and, when cooled, form a glass bead called a “borax pearl.” Borax decomposes with complex chemicals without losing its properties.
Borax has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. Used in the manufacture of slimes to reduce the development of pathogens. Occurs naturally in crystalline or monolithic form, similar to anhydrite or gypsum. The substance is an important raw material for the production and rapid extraction of borates and perborates.
Borax is a component of many detergent, cosmetic and enamel glazes. Used for the manufacture of buffer solutions in biochemistry, as a fire retardant, antifungal compounds, and in the production of fiberglass. Borax is used for glazing on ceramics, glass and enamel.
Besides polyvinyl alcohol, distilled water and food coloring, sodium tetraborate is an important ingredient for slime.
Thickener for slime at home: gel for washing and washing
Do you want to know how you can thicken slime if you don’t have tetraborate or don’t want to use it? Use Fairy dishwashing gel or Persil washing gel as a thickener.
- Recipe 1 . Mix a package of PVA glue (125 ml) and a teaspoon of Fairy detergent. Mix well. The mass quickly takes shape and is easily kneaded with your hands. The result is an original mother-of-pearl slime.
- Recipe 2 . Mix a bottle of PVA glue with 2 capsules of washing gel. To ensure the mixture is homogeneous, knead it thoroughly with your hands or use a blender. After this, leave the slime to rest for 30 minutes. After half an hour it will be ready for use.
This recipe is not suitable for people prone to allergic skin reactions.
How to make fluffy slime without sodium tetraborate?
It will be based on silicate glue. All you need is a detergent in the form of a concentrated gel. Their proportion is as follows: for a tablespoon of glue you need to take half a teaspoon of washing gel.
The process of making slime: drop some dye into the glue and stir well. Pour in the washing gel and stir. The reaction will be observed right before your eyes. The toy will be ready in a minute.
It's fun to make several slimes of different colors. Then put them together and stretch them. It turns out to be a real rainbow. And as you play, the shades will mix and you’ll get something new. The child will like this slime, as it stretches well, turning into a transparent film.
How to thicken slime using air freshener
Instead of boric acid, you can use aerosol air freshener or hairspray when making slimes.
The recipe is elementary. Pour a tube of office glue or PVA into a dry container. Spray the adhesive mixture with varnish or freshener. Do not spray the entire bottle at once. Spraying should be portioned and with mandatory mixing of the mass.
As a result of the work, an elastic lump will form. In order for it to gain elasticity and stretch well, you need to give the slime 20-30 minutes to rest.
It is important to know:
- Not all air fresheners are suitable for making slime. Recommended ones include AirWick.
- When choosing a varnish, give preference to a product with high hold.
- Varnish and freshener are interchangeable components, not companions in one recipe.
- You should work with aerosol products in a well-ventilated area.
- A soda solution will help you achieve consistency from a too liquid mass.
How to make slime without sodium tetraborate, but only from flour?
This recipe makes more of a handgam, that is, chewing gum for the hands. Because it turns out to be quite dense. But it is still interesting for children and adults to play with it, and no care is required.
To make your own slime you need to take 1 cup of flour and 2 cups of water. Be sure to mix them so that you get a fairly liquid mass of homogeneous consistency. If desired, you can add any dye: gouache, acrylic or food paint. You just need to take into account that a lot of gouache in the slime will get your hands dirty.
Now the preparation for the slime without adding sodium tetraborate needs to be thoroughly heated in the microwave for 1 minute. The power should be set to the average value. While it is warm, it wrinkles and stretches well. After cooling it becomes hard and elastic. But even then it remains an excellent anti-stress.
For those who want to make slime from flour without heating, the following recipe will be useful. In it, you need to add jelly-like shower gel or very thick dishwashing detergent to the flour (hairspray will not work). More precisely, pour detergent into the container, and then gradually add flour and mix. Once the mixture has acquired sufficient density, it can be picked up to play. This is the simplest slime recipe without glue and sodium tetraborate.
How to thicken slime at home - baking soda
Instead of an activator, you can include baking soda in the slime. It promotes progressive thickening of mucus and, in addition, it is much easier to find at home than sodium tetraborate.
Production technology:
- Pour a glass of warm water into a deep container and pour 2 tablespoons of soda into it;
- Add office glue to the solution, but do not stir, but carefully collect it, pulling it with a spatula from the edges to the center;
- It will take time and diligence for the glue to be saturated with the solution and take an elastic shape, but you will like the result;
- Once the mass becomes dense, you can begin kneading by hand.
The thickness of the slime depends on the type of glue used. If the slime turns out to be runny, you can add a few drops of boric acid to it.
Recipe for sodium tetraborate from borax
To prepare sodium tetraborate using this method, you will need borax. Borax can be purchased at a hardware store. The cost of a package of borax (20 g of powder) is 40-50 rubles.
We will need:
- 20 grams of borax
- 80 g glycerin
Pour 80 grams of glycerin into a container, add 20 g of borax. Mix everything vigorously. After a day, the precipitate will dissolve and it will be possible to work with sodium tetraborate. Next, you can start preparing the slime.
Gelatin for slime production
To get not a classic slime, but a trembling mass, gelatin is used. The toy will not have the usual plasticity. You won't be able to stretch it or mold it into something. It is more suitable for water procedures. These moydodyr slimes are made from gelatin and shampoo or shower gel.
Mix gelatin solution with cosmetic product. Stir well, pour into shaped molds and refrigerate for an hour and a half. After this, you can take the collagen-containing slime with you into the bath and wash.
Is it possible or not to replace borax in the slime, what to thicken it with, besides it?
All the main components of the slime are represented by loose, hard or liquid substances, and the toy itself should be soft and elastic, which is why activators or thickeners are needed. All slime ingredients can be found in the kitchen or in your home medicine cabinet. However, slimes with these components are of lower quality and will take more time to prepare.
In order to get a dense and viscous slime, you need to add homemade thickeners that will replace sodium tetraborate. They are affordable and safe for the child’s health, which is important for playing with slime.
How can you thicken slime without tetraborate?
How can you thicken slime without sodium tetraborate? The answer is sugar. This product is present in every home. Suitable for making slimes, but with the only caveat - they melt when exposed to heat. You won't be able to play with them for a long time.
The technology for producing “sugar” slimes is as follows: mix 2 tablespoons of shampoo or shower gel with 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar. Mix the mixture thoroughly until smooth. To make the task easier, you can take powdered sugar.
Place the finished mixture in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours. After they expire, the slime is ready. At first it will be elastic and pliable, but as soon as it warms up well in your hands, it will begin to spread.
Master confectioners create original slimes using powdered sugar. They are used to decorate cakes and other desserts. You too can try yourself as a confectioner.
Marshmallow heated in the microwave is perfect for making sweet slimes. Add powdered sugar to it and start kneading. The mass turns out to be very plastic and pliable. They are convenient for making small slimes.
To make figures for the cake, you should add more powdered sugar and bring the mass to the state of plasticine.
How to make a toy at home with your own hands: recipes with different ingredients
Borax or sodium tetraborate is considered the second most popular component of classic slime after glue.
It can be purchased at hardware stores and some pharmacies. Although this substance improves the properties of chewing gum for hands, it may well be replaced by other ingredients, so you should not worry about the lack of this component. To make the desired slime at home, you need to use the following items:
- Plastic or glass bowl.
- Wooden/plastic spoon or stick.
- Latex gloves.
- Dyes or gouache.
From soda, glue and shaving foam
Shaving foam gives the slime volume and lightness; it is perfect for creating fluffy slime. However, such foam does not work with every type of glue. For this recipe, it is better to use PVA glue or office glue , the main thing is that it is thick. If you need to get a more viscous slime, you can use contact lens liquid as a thickener.
The cooking recipe is as follows:
- Pour glue into a small container, add dye to it and mix thoroughly.
- Shaving foam is added to the same container and the mixture is stirred again.
- In a separate container, mix baking soda and lens liquid until completely dissolved.
- Then the resulting mixtures must be combined and stirred until the mass is no longer sticky.
Important! The slime will be soft and tender, so it will perfectly complement your child’s toy collection.

Thicken the slime with starch
The starch slime recipe is very simple.
For it you will need:
- starch;
- vegetable oil (refined);
- shampoo;
- food coloring for color (optional)
Mix oil, shampoo and dye until smooth. Add starch to it. The mixture should acquire a dough-like consistency. It is better to knead the slime with your hands. This will allow you to quickly give it the desired shape. For variety, you can replace the shampoo with condensed milk. The result will be, if not a bun, then a completely edible slime.
Why is sodium tetraborate dangerous?
Sodium tetraborate cannot be called a highly toxic substance. It does not emit harmful fumes into the air and is safe in contact with skin. However, if ingested, it can cause many negative effects. Among them:
- nausea, vomiting;
- abdominal pain, colic;
- loss of appetite;
- dizziness, loss of consciousness;
- convulsive muscle contractions;
- arrhythmia.
Sodium tetraborate can be purchased at any pharmacy - it is widely used in medicine
For this reason, for a small child who still puts everything he sees in his mouth, it is worth making slime from safer ingredients.
Hydrogen peroxide will help thicken the slime.
An excellent remedy for obtaining the desired density and consistency of mucus is a pharmaceutical preparation - hydrogen peroxide. If you mix it with starch, the slime will be soft and pliable, and if you use baking soda instead, it will become elastic.
- Mix starch and cold water in a 1:1 ratio or with hot water 1:2. Add PVA and peroxide to the resulting jelly-like mass.
- For the second recipe, the proportions remain the same, but peroxide should be replaced with soda.
Homemade slime activator
This component is relevant in the manufacture of colored, transparent and other types of slimes. It always comes to the rescue for those who like to experiment with different slam recipes, especially if the slime stubbornly refuses to thicken and take on a clear shape. You can make an activator at home.
You will need a liter bottle of water and 50 ml of sodium tetraborate. Mix and shake. The solution can be stored in a cool, dark place.
Slime consistency
The slime does not reach the required density for several reasons:
- Expired components. Before purchasing and using the ingredients needed to make slime, carefully check their expiration dates. Adding expired slime to the composition will reduce its properties.
- Large amount of water. When creating slime, it should be in moderation, otherwise it will simply spread. In addition, excess fluid suppresses the connecting reactions of the components.
- Changing the recipe. To get a high-quality toy, you must strictly follow the instructions for its manufacture and use the products specified in the recipe. By replacing them with analogue ones, you may not be able to make the right choice.
- Failure to comply with proportions. Most often, an insufficient amount of activator leads to the fact that the slime does not thicken. When correcting the situation, you should add it to the mucus carefully, in small portions.
Video on how to thicken slime: TOP 10 thickeners
It's time to take a closer look at the question of how you can thicken slime. If during the creative process there is a clear miscalculation with one of the components and the slime does not want to hold its shape, spreads or sticks to your hands, it is necessary to correct the defect. There are several ways to thicken mucus. Try each of them:
Almighty glue
In the case where the slime was made on the basis of PVA glue diluted with water, there may be an excess of liquid that inhibits the action of the activator. An additional portion of glue and thorough kneading of the mass will allow you to correct a small defect.
Exposure to cold
Low temperatures contribute to the thickening of slimes made on any basis (plasticine, glue, cosmetics and detergents). That is why, after the last stage of kneading, they must be placed in an airtight container and sent to the refrigerator for an hour and a half.
Mixing
This process must be repeated when introducing each of the slime ingredients. Stirring can be called a mechanical catalyst. It accelerates chemical reactions, forcing components to quickly and correctly interact with each other, leading to the desired result. Mixing is done not only with a spoon or spatula, but also by hand.
We call on the thickener to help
If the above methods do not give the desired result, there is only one way out - using an activator. A few drops are enough. You don't need to add much as the slime can become tough and brittle.
Useful lifehacks
In order for the slime to be the right consistency and delight your child for a long time, you need to follow some recommendations when making it:
- Shampoo and water should be used at room temperature.
- Ready-made slime should not be placed on items with pile.
- Slime should be kept away from pets.
- To make the perfect slime, you need to choose fresh glue.
- Slime is sensitive to exposure to the sun and air, so it must be stored in a closed container and preferably in the refrigerator.
- If, over time, the slime begins to dry out, it should be placed in warm water.
- If the slime starts to spread, a pinch of salt will help.
- Slime should not be put in your mouth or rubbed into your eyes, and you should wash your hands thoroughly after playing with it.
Sodium tetraborate or borax is not a necessary element for creating slime ; other thickeners of organic origin can be used. If you follow all the proportions, spare no time and make every effort to prepare it, you can get an excellent anti-stress toy. This slime will become a child’s favorite pastime and will benefit the development of his imagination.
